We all know that stress can do a number on our health. But perhaps we’d know to pay more attention to it if we’d realize it’s affecting the way we look. That’s right, not only can stress make us sick, but stress and aging have a thing or two in common: the more we have it, the older we look.

Stress and Aging: What’s the Connection?

Aging is nothing to be ashamed about. It’s quite literally the natural response our bodies have to years of environmental influence. Some people look older and some older people look younger. It has a lot to do with genetics, so don’t blame yourself for it.

Stress has been known to cause a multitude of negative health effects. For example, anxiety, depression, isolation, and unemployment. Also on that list is aging, although aging is a complex process. In fact, you could say everything on that list is an aging catalyst.

The genetic connection

We all have a certain number of chromosomes: 46, to be exact. These chromosomes are essentially databases of DNA information. DNA and therefore chromosomes can become damaged through various environment factors. Stress, for example.

The way stress and aging correlate in our genes is very specific. At the ends of our DNA strands, we have things called telomeres, which can be affected by stress. When you are stressed out, these telomeres become stunted and experience shrinkage. This severely weakens cellular structure in cells, causing rapid aging.

It’s hard to tell what kind of stress could be harming your DNA, though, as we all live similarly daily stressful lives. Aging can be one of those stressors.

Long story short: aging is a stressful cycle of stress.

What can we do about it?

The obvious solution is “don’t be stressed.” But if it were that simple, we wouldn’t have hundreds of psychological studies on why stress management is tricky. It’s hard to tackle stress because it’s hard to tell what is stressing us out in any given moment.

Here are some of the recommended ways to deal with stress:

  • Get physical
  • Good nights rest
  • Relaxation techniques/meditation
  • Talk to a therapist
  • Avoid excessive caffeine

We are attacked by loads of stress and information on the daily. The most important step in staying young and healthy looking is to stay healthy and stress-free.
