Do you have dry or acne-ridden skin that you just can’t seem to get a handle on? It might just be some of your daily habits taking their toll on your skin. You may have never even guessed some of these. Here are some bad skin habits to look out for.

Bad Skin Habits to Avoid

Never cleaning your makeup brushes

The makeup brushes you use every day are a breeding ground of all kinds of bacteria. Skin oils can get trapped in them, making the conditions ideal for bacterial growth. You should clean them with a mild facial cleanser and warm water every other week or so.

Not using sunscreen

Sunscreen is great for dermal care. Many people think it’s something they wear to the beach or when they’re hiking, but have you thought about wearing it on an average sunny day? The sun can do an incredible amount of damage. So, you should keep that in mind every single day—consider applying sunscreen multiple times a day. If you suffer from sun damage already, there are skin care options available to treat it.

Popping pimples

It’s understandable if popping pimples is a hard habit to kick: it gives you the same rush of danger that a roller coaster gives you. Unfortunately, popping pimples is one of the worst bad skin habits for a reason. Nevermind that popping pimples in the Danger Triangle is, obviously, dangerous, but popping pimples in general can leave scars and spread the infection. All in all, it’s not good for your skin.

This one is obvious. Smoking does a lot of harm to your body, so it comes as no surprise the dangers it has for your skin. Smoking can prematurely age your skin, making you look a lot older than you actually are. Even smoking for a year can make you look five years older. It’s just not worth it.

Not moisturizing

Using moisturizers or lotions seems like something you can just pass off on and get away with. Maybe some people can, but the positive effects that lotions give you make it an obvious choice of a good skin habit. Even if you don’t use lotion in the morning or at night, opting out of any kind of moisturizers can lead to dry and even uncomfortable skin.

Not getting enough water

The things you ingest ultimately have an impact on your hair and skin. Drinking water hydrates and cleanses your body, making your skin healthy and clean naturally. Drink water every day—at least the recommended amount is the bare minimum if taking care of your skin is important to you.

Sleeping with makeup on

When you go to bed with makeup on, you’re asking for your pores to be clogged. It’s an easy way to earn yourself a face full of pimples and blackheads. Before you go to bed, make sure you wash your face with towelettes.
